What is the ultimate secret to your success? Simple. YOU and you must believe in yourself.
Or to be a little bit more specific, your success depends mainly on what you think of yourself. And whether you believe in yourself.
I’m sure at some point you’ve been told to “believe in yourself.” Sounds like a bunch motivational speaker jibber-jabber at first, doesn’t it? But let me tell you this: when it comes to your business, believing in yourself is the single most important determining factor in your success. True story.
You could have the world’s snappiest marketing. The most legit sales funnel on the planet. Even the most effective products or services known to man.
But if YOU aren’t 100% behind it, nothing else is going to work. If you don’t believe in yourself so deeply that 100 skeptical people couldn’t talk you down, you’re probably not going to get past “go.”
It comes down to one simple truth: if you don’t believe in yourself, how will anyone else believe in you? (Or buy from you, for that matter?)
Take my current business adventure, The Pitch Queen. I’m devoted to sharing my 20 years of sales experience with up and coming entrepreneurs just like you. I discovered that my personal mission in life is to help you love sales as much as I do. And I knew I had to run with it.
When I was sharing this idea with people, though, I didn’t get an universal high-five. Some people thought it was a brilliant idea. But there were others who couldn’t wait to tell me where I was destined to go wrong.
You’re not really good at this marketing stuff. You can’t write. Who’s going to read your blog or watch your Facebook Live Show? What if this, what if that….it went on and on.
But here’s the thing: I didn’t care. All of that negativity that people were throwing my way didn’t even make it past my ears. I was passionate not only about the message behind The Pitch Queen, but I also had an unwavering belief in MYSELF.
That’s just it: when you believe in yourself, nothing else can stop you.
Believing in yourself and loving what you do makes magical things happen. The naysayers and critics and their negative barbs are a LOT more likely to go in one ear and out the other. When you’re 100% confident in yourself, all of the negative talk bounces off of you like arrows off of a brick wall.
Sounds a lot easier said than done, though, right? Seriously, if it was as easy to “believe in yourself” as all that, I’d just tell you to do it and away you’d go, never letting a single skeptical comment get you down, right?
Funny how it isn’t quite that simple in the real world, though.
Here’s what I’m going to do for you right now: I’m going to share my favorite ways to boost your confidence, see yourself as the prize, and get excited about who you are and what you do.
It’s a quick little crash-course in self-love and confidence-boosting that’ll get you so jazzed about yourself and your offerings that you really WON’T care what other people say. You’ll be too busy sharing your message, doing it with joy, and LOVING what you do.
Let’s jump right in and get your confidence flying!
Step 1: Talk To Yourself Like a Champion!
To really believe in yourself, you’ve got to be extremely confident. Where does confidence come from? By knowing that you are a true champion.
It’s about rebuilding your thought process to shift from self-doubt to self-love. Starting to see yourself like a champion right now. And to start treating yourself that way, too.
The other day on my friend Sean Croxton’s “The Quote of the Day Show” podcast, he and his guest took this from a really cool and effective perspective. It was a concept that he called “Be, Do, Have.”
And this is what the gist was…
By becoming a new version of yourself, you’re able to do what you must in order to have what you desire.
So you have to BE the person you want to become first. Then you DO what is required to make things happen. And then you will HAVE what it is that you desire.
Now, notice what comes first here: BEING the person who you want to be.
In my case, I decided that I was going to become The Pitch Queen. I started my podcast, Success Unfiltered. I started my Coffee Is For Closers show on Facebook Live. In effect, I stepped into the place of BEING who I wanted to be first. All-in, right away.
After that, the rest followed. The Pitch Queen was born and is in full-swing now.
And THEN there was that one time I went on this little show called “Shark Tank.”
Yep, you read that right! Now, here’s the thing: at the time I had no business being on a show like that. My company, FITzee Foods, had only just gotten started. At the time I didn’t even have any real-live products to show them (our protein bars were only cardboard prototypes at the time. Tasty, right?)
But I applied anyway. I got the support and the coaching I needed to show up, get in front of the Sharks themselves, and make my pitch.
I was one of 146 people who pitched for Season 4. Only 96 people got onto an episode that aired. I was not one of them.
But it was STILL the best experience of my life.
Now, what was the REAL reason I got as far as I did with that adventure? I believed in myself. I knew I had an amazing product and I wanted people to know about it. I didn’t care who told me what about my chances of making it onto the show. It didn’t matter to me how hard it might be.
So I stepped into the person I wanted to become. I believed in myself. Then I took action and made it happen.
That’s the key: you need to BE who you want to be. Step into that place. Then DO what you need to do by taking action. And then you will HAVE what you want.
Step 2: It’s All About The Affirmations (And YES, they do work…)
A couple of months ago, my friend Garrain Jones met up for a chat on my podcast. He told me something that I’d always known but for years I had put on the back burner. He said, “If you really want to charge up your day, start by saying what you’re grateful for.”
Mindset work. Affirmations. I know you’ve heard all that before. You may have even tried them before and had a mixed bag of success.
But it’s like anything else. It works when you actually USE it. And use it CONSISTENTLY.
It’s just like going to the gym. You’ve got to be just as consistent in how you treat yourself and how you work on your mindset. This is how you truly begin to believe in yourself.
It’s all about coming up with positive statements and inspiring affirmations that work for YOU. Then using them every single day.
It’s a matter of choosing the words that match your dreams and getting them in front of you several times a day, every day. Start telling yourself that you’re a champion. Talk to yourself as though you’re a superstar. And keep those positive vibes flowing all day, every day.
Even if what you’re telling yourself is not quite true TODAY, that’s OK. It might not be happening in the real world just yet, but keep saying it anyways. Treat it like it’s happening right now.
My favorite way to shift my mindset and kick my vibration into high-gear? Simple repetition. Repeating them to myself continuously throughout the day.
I repeat my own affirmations anywhere from 50 to 100 times a day. Sounds like a lot, I know, but it’s a lot easier than it sounds like to work it into the day.
I say my magic words when I’m warming up on the treadmill. When I’m out and about running errands. Before I get on client calls. I simply tell myself the good stuff…and rise up to meet it in that high-vibe space.
No matter whether you write it in a journal, set it up in reminders on your phone, or say it out loud, make it something that truly pumps you up and gets you going.
Start practicing this now. Even if it seems silly or even embarrassing at first. Don’t overthink it. Simply work it into your day, a little bit at a time. And be CONSISTENT.
Now, just for the record, believing in yourself doesn’t mean you’re cocky or self-centered. All it means is that you trust in yourself that you can make things happen. You believe in yourself more than you take counsel of the outside influences and the endless noise of the world.
Just like we said last month when we were discussing business relationships and rapport, people want to buy from people. But what they want even more is to buy from people who truly believe in themselves.
The goal is to believe in yourself so much that when you present your products, services, or pitch, your confidence radiates. It’s that moment when people look at you with wonder and awe and say, “Wow, you really love what you do, huh?”
When that happens, you know you’re on the right track!
Let’s start getting you there today! Here’s a little action step for you: Come up with three affirmations that speak to you. Three things that motivate, inspire, and put the “whoo!” into your day.
Write them down in your journal. Say them out loud. Repeat them to yourself as you go about your day. Make them part of your everyday routine, and do it consistently.
It’s the first step to trusting, expanding, and being the person you want to be. The one that you can believe in no matter what the rest of the world says, does, or thinks.
Love what you do. Treat yourself like a champion starting right now. Put these two things together and you will be unstoppable.
