You probably know what it’s like to be turned down by a client. It happens to us all in the business world. But did you know that when it comes to sales, the NO can go both ways?
Here’s the deal: sales is all about relationships. Just like any other relationship, if it’s going to be a harmonious one, both parties have to be happy. And just because you’re the one asking for money doesn’t mean that you’re obligated to take every Tom, Dick, and Harry that shows up on a sales call.
In other words, YOU have as much right to say NO to a deal as the client does. It’s just as important that the seller be as satisfied in the relationship as the buyer. And if you take on clients that aren’t the right fit, it won’t be long before EVERYBODY involved is unhappy.
Maybe you said YES to the wrong client because rent was due and you needed a sale. Maybe it was because you were afraid another prospect wouldn’t show up. Maybe you said YES because you’re just too darn nice to say NO.
All of these reasons don’t justify taking on a less than ideal client. The quality of your work will plummet. Your stress level will soar. Eventually you might wind up resentful. And you might even ruin a client relationship for good. That’s a pretty hefty price to pay for the sake of a sale.
