Have you ever considered that it might be time to hire a business coach, if you’re trying to learn a new skill?
As entrepreneurs, we learn many new skills all the time. We’re constantly wearing many hats, and filling all of the roles in our companies. But sometimes, there’s a moment where you don’t have the skill that you need.
Take my career, for example. I started FITzee Foods, then a coaching business, and now this podcast!
But when I started this podcast, I didn’t know anything about podcasting. I knew that I had a message, but I didn’t have the know-how to make it happen.
I spent time learning how to podcast: I talked to other podcasters, listened to how they interviewed, and learned from them. When I didn’t know what to do, or how to do it, I had to ask someone for help.
If you compare the first episode of the podcast with the current episodes, you can hear just how much I have learned and grown. I attribute all of that growth to the help that I have received along the way: I couldn’t have learned these podcasting skills on my own.
Sometimes there are skills that we need to learn to help us be successful, and sometimes we need to hire a business coach to help us learn those skills.
This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Lindsay Burton, founded the Kayo Conference. She’d set up the conference, booked speakers, and was ready to go – but then she realized she didn’t have an emcee! Instead of hiring someone to serve as the emcee, Lindsay hired an acting coach, and was able to emcee the conference herself. Because she led the conference, she was able to authentically connect with her ideal clientele.
So what should you be looking for when you think you need to hire a business coach?
Hire a Coach for Specific Skills
Do you need to learn a specific skill? It might be time to hire a business coach to help you master that skill!
When you’re looking to master a specific skill, it might be the perfect time to hire someone that’s already an expert in that arena. They can train and teach you for a short time period to give you the boost you need. Since they’re an expert, they know the best way to be able to help you acquire the skills you need.
Lindsay Burton hired an acting coach to help her learn how to be an emcee for her conference. She had all of the information that she needed to be successful except for one key element.
Once she learned those skills, she was able to authentically lead the conference and connect with her ideal clients. If Lindsay had not employed a coach, she may have not been able to lead the conference with confidence, and that could have impacted the entire trajectory of her business & profitability of her events.

Wondering How to Hire a Business Coach
You know that you need a business coach, but you have no idea what to look for…
Here are some strategies to help you hire a coach that will help you in your business.
Read Reviews
One of the most important things that you can do to help yourself find a coach that will be able actually help you. There are many people out there who don’t have experience coaching, you don’t want to invest money in someone who won’t be able to actually help you succeed.
Reviews are so important because they are from actual clients telling you the truth about what it is like to work with this particular coach.
Ask for Referrals
Is there is someone whose business you admire and respect? It’s time to ask them if they have a coach to recommend to you! They may be able to recommend a coach or resource that will be the perfect fit for you.
If there is someone who is in the same industry as you, they may be able to help you find someone who will be able to help take you to the next level. Don’t underestimate the power of a referral!
Vet Your Potential Coach
Read the contract of a potential business coach very carefully. Here are a few things you should watch for when you’re hiring a coach.
- Do they make income guarantees? NO coach can make income guarantees! The income is dependent on clients doing the work, and using the new skills they have been taught!
- Do they vet their potential clients, or do they take everyone who comes to them? I am very picky about who I say YES to taking on as a client!
- Are they clear about what it’s like to work with them and how much time you can expect to spend on homework? I make sure that all of my coaching clients know that they will need to spend hours every week on their homework. They’ll have to show up in their business to see results!
